A Robust Optimization Model for Strategic Production and Distribution Planning for a New Product

We study the strategic design of a supply chain for new products. Planning a supply chain for a new product requires addressing both uncertainties in demand and cost and changes in market conditions over time. We develop a mathematical programming model for new products that includes both financial viability and robustness relative to uncertainty. An example based on a Fortune 200 company’s efforts to develop a supply chain for a spin-off product illustrates the model. We derive insights on the cost drivers for supply chain development decisions and the tradeoff between investment and cash flow. We also demonstrate the effects of uncertainty and delaying investment decisions in supply chain development. 2
